Francis Bacon once said, the figurative must be reinvented. Without any intent of any unreasonable parallel, this is exactly what I think. And if my paintings have aspects that can be interpreted as belonging to the past, it is also true that they bear other aspects as well, that make them undeniably contemporary. In some paintings I strive to paint what I see and I intend for them to be, as near as possible, a portrayal of reality.
However, in other paintings, I tend to unleash my imagination. The landscapes I paint are not real, that is, they exist only as a fragment of my imagination. They are, at best, memories of reality. Nowadays, the sense of my pictorial work is developed around this duality, which, while seeming paradoxical, stimulates me. Joćo Feijó |
